Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that helps clients process and work through difficult emotions, distressing experiences, and trauma. It is based on the idea that where we look can influence how we access and process experiences held in the brain and body. During a session, the therapist helps the client identify a specific point in their visual field, or “brainspot,” that may be connected to a particular feeling, memory, or physical sensation. The therapist then provides a calm, supportive space for the client to notice and process whatever comes up.
Brainspotting may be helpful for individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, emotional distress, stress, grief, and other experiences that feel stuck or difficult to process. Clients do not need to retell every detail of a difficult experience for the therapy to be effective. Instead, sessions may involve noticing emotions, thoughts, memories, body sensations, or images as they naturally arise. Each person’s experience is different, and processing may feel subtle or deeply emotional.
Clients can expect a collaborative, supportive process that moves at their own pace. Your therapist will help you identify what you would like to work on, guide you through the brainspotting process, and provide support as you notice and process your internal experience. Some clients experience a sense of relief, clarity, or emotional release, while others notice more gradual changes over time. Brainspotting can be an emotionally meaningful experience, so your therapist will work with you to maintain a sense of safety, stability, and control throughout treatment.
